BIAC Offers Summer Rowing and Paddling Programs for Non-Members

The Center's sweep rowing, sculling, and paddling programs are all offering Community Access Programs (CAPs) this summer, aimed at adults in the surrounding communities who would like to try out a new aquatic sport.

Neither previous experience nor BIAC membership is required of participants in any of these programs. For details, see the CAPS page on the BIAC web site.

"We Knew Her Back When . . ." (Precocious BIAC Cox'n Makes Good)
Late last month, one-time BIAC cox Sarah Sherman got the news that she'd been accepted to attend the Junior National Team Selection Camp this summer in San Diego. Sarah, who is about to complete her sophomore year at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., started coxing at age 12 at the old Stanford Rowing Club, BIAC's "parent" organization. (She has also sculled a single since she was 13.) At Andover, Sarah has coxed the boys' first varsity 8+ since her freshman year.

We emailed Sarah to ask about the latest development in her coxing career. Here is her reply:

I am very excited about going to the Junior National Team Selection Camp this summer. To qualify for the camp, I needed to send in a practice/race tape and a coxing resume. I think the National Team coaches base a lot on previous racing experience and the tape, as they have no concrete numbers with which to judge us (such as erg times).

If I had any advice to give a coxswain, I'd say, RECORD EVERYTHING! I didn't know I was going to apply until this winter, and by then, my school's crew had stopped rowing. I was stuck with no tapes. That's where you all came in! I coxed at BIAC during my spring break and made some tapes. I guess they did the trick.

The camp this summer starts June 11 and it ends either when you are cut or when you finish the race at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Athens, Greece, on August 7-10. The 8+ is the only boat which requires a coxswain on the women's Junior National Team. There are 5 or 6 coxswains competing for that one spot. It will be tough, and I'm excited for the experience.               - Sarah Sherman

PADDLING NEWS

BIAC Hosts NorCal's First OC6 Race of 2003 Season
On April 26, the BIAC paddling program, Hui Wa'a, put on the annual Berkeley Pier race. This was the first OC6 (six-person outrigger canoe) race of the 2003 season. The course started near the Berkeley marina, proceeded along the Berkeley pier, then out to Treasure Island, and finally returned to near the Berkeley marina for the finish.

In addition to hosting the race, BIAC fielded teams that performed well -- including an 11-second overall win by the open men's team.

Complete results can be found on the Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association web site.

BIAC Paddlers Participate in Santa Barbara's "Rig Run" Race
Five BIAC teams traveled to Santa Barbara to participate in the Rig Run race on May 17. This annual 11-mile OC6 race heads offshore to go around two oil rigs and then returns. We borrowed a few paddlers from other clubs to complete our crews and were able to enter one women's senior masters team, two senior masters men's teams, and one masters men's team.

Our masters men's team finished third in its division and fifth overall -- an excellent result in the highly competitive southern California outrigger canoe racing circuit. Complete results can be found at www.koa.org.

ROWING NEWS

BIAC Strikes Gold (and Silver and Bronze) at Gold Rush Regatta
BIAC rowers brought home plenty of precious metal from the Gold Rush Masters Regatta on May 25 at Lake Natoma, near Sacramento. We entered a total of 13 boats in 10 events. Of these, 7 boats won medals. The winning BIAC boats (age categories) and their finishing places were:

Men's single (F+) - Luis Yanez 3rd
Men's quad (A+) - 2nd
Women's 8+ (A-B) - 1st
Women's 4+ (A) - 2nd
Mixed quad (A+) - 1st
Mixed 8+ (A-B) - 2nd
Men's single sprint - Brian Dour 2nd

Honorable mention goes to the BIAC novice women's 8+, who rowed an impressive first race.

Congratulations to all who represented BIAC in this highly competitive regional regatta!

This Winter, Try Erging to Paris!
Here's a recent bulletin from our friends at Concept2:

Building on the success of last year's U.S. Indoor Rowing team trip to the British Indoor Rowing Championships [see story], Concept2 will once again be assembling a team of the fastest indoor rowers in the country. The 2nd Annual U.S. Indoor Rowing Team will travel to Paris in December 2003 to compete in the 1st Annual European Indoor Rowing Championships.

The 12-member team will be selected based on 2000m rowing scores, in the age and weight classes of the European Championship.
