Los Gatos Rowing Club at BIAC

BIAC welcomes the LGRC to Redwood City. LGRC and BIAC leaders understand your need to row at another facility in 2008 while the Lexington reservoir is drained and refilled. BIAC looks forward to accommodating LGRC as members during this time.

Orientation and Work Party information

General: There is a simple agreement, but basically LGRC will be able to have their equipment at BIAC and use our facilities like any other BIAC members. LGRC will have a rack on BIAC's north end by the end of May. You can zoom in on the yard below.

Basic Safety and Care for all LGRC members:

  1. Have a signed liability waivers on record with BIAC. These can simply be printed, signed, and placed right inside of the the boathouse door into BIAC's large black plastic mail box. There are also blank waivers in the BIAC hallway credenza.
  2. Read our web site section on Safety and Care to familiarize everyone with our environment and procedures. Please see www.gobair.org/safety_and_care
  3. Use the BIAC member's sign in/out log (Log Shed is top of ramp next to Gas Shed). Insurance and occasional rescues drive this.  See our simply use policy at http://www.gobair.org/programs/safety_and_care/LogLightStayRight.html
  4. Sign up on the BIAC_AC Yahoo group to stay informed by email of important BIAC-wide updates. Sorry if this seems like a lot of new rules, but this is how all members stay safe and informed in our dynamic marine home.

Sunday May 25 at 9:00 - Orientation and Work Party

We gathered at BIAC for a brief introduction to the BIAC facility and new friends. Thereafter we assembled in the north yard to a) Setup the racks and b) Construct two oar lockers (if achievable that day, based on people, tools, and materials).

A. Setting up the racks:

  • Clear and level the north yard
  • Assemble existing racks in place
  • Align racks and spars
  • Populate racks with shells

Tools needed for setting up racks:

  • 8-10 people to clear and prepare the area
  • Team of four including one foreman to set up racks
  • Rakes (2-4 needed, 1 provided at BIAC)
  • 5/16" allen wrench for rack set screws (1-2, 1 provided)
  • Level and possibly twine (provided)
  • Measuring tape (provided at BIAC)

Materials: No additional materials should be needed to set up the racks.

B. Creating oar lockers:

We imagined something like THIS. An exploded construction diagram is here. A plan to cutout the plywood is here. The original designs from Rebuilding Day for all of BIAC's 15 lockers are here (working sketches).

These lockers should be built with the hinges on the left and hasp on the right due to prevailing winds. Be sure to install the hasp on the door instead of on the locker frame. The oar lockers will be mounted on a level base (provided already) and fixed to the clubhouse exterior wall similar to the lockers next to BIAC's south and main clubhouse entrance. We even have extra 'Lady Liberty' paint to help weatherproof your storage.

Here are some pictures of our current oar lockers:

Tools needed to construct Oar Lockers:

  • Teams of 2-4 per locker plus one overall foreman
  • Circular Saws (2 needed, none at BIAC)
  • Measuring tape (provided).
  • Clamps for safer plywood cutting (provided)
  • Carpenter's square for safer/accurate cutting (provided)
  • Screw guns (2-4 needed, none at BIAC) with chargers
  • Caulking gun (provided)
  • Paint tray and rollers (provided)

Materials needed to construct each Oar Locker:

  • Six 4x8 sheets of 3/8" plywood (for faces)
  • Four 16' long 2x4's (for side post)
  • Two 12' long 2x4's (for door frame posts)
  • Six 8' long 2x4's (for cross pieces all faces)
  • 2 lbs. of 1 1/4" decks screws (join faces to frames)
  • 1 lbs of 3" deck screws (joins frames to frames)
  • One tube PL300 equivalent construction glue (face bond to frame)
  • Three hinges for door (see closeup of existing lockers)
  • One hasp for door (see closeup of existing lockers)
  • Paint ('Lady Liberty' provided at BIAC)

The main mission for Sunday May 25 was to get the north end racks set up. This was done before noon. I small team of 8 remained until 5:00 to complete the oar lockers.
