Join us on the water!
Register now for one of our spring or summer Learn to Row classes. Our classes
offer an exceptional opportunity for people of all abilities to experience
this beautiful and traditional sport in a friendly, supportive environment.
Rowing is a wonderful form of low-impact exercise. Classes are held in the
waters surrounding Bair Island, the largest remaining restorable wetlands in
the South San Francisco Bay.
Printer-friendly flyer for the upcoming session.
Learn to Row classes meet Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 am - Noon for four
consecutive weekends. Classes meet at BIAC in Redwood City (location). The course fee is $250 and includes a three-month BIAC trial
membership.
The first two classes will be spent on land, getting familiar with the boats and learning the basic stroke on ergometers (rowing machines).
By the third class, we will be in a boat and out on the water.
The remaining classes will be spent primarily on the water.
If your schedule makes it difficult to attend all eight classes, note that the first three classes are especially important and should not be missed.
Wear comfortable and close-fitting workout clothing. Bicycling gear is great
for rowing. Loose or baggy clothing can get caught in the sliding seat or an
oar handle. In colder weather, wear layers. Shoes should provide good
traction and be able to get wet. However, they will be left on the dock while
rowing.
Other articles to bring include a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water.
BIAC offers year-round novice and advanced rowing programs which you may join
after completing a Learn to Row class. No previous rowing experience is
necessary to enroll in the Learn to Row class. Swimming ability is
required.
